Quick Tips

Are copywriting jobs in demand?

Copywriters are definitely in demand.

A quick search on LinkedIn revealed over 21,000 copywriter jobs in North America alone.

And over 5,000 of those were listed as entry-level copywriting jobs.

glassdoor had over 2,500 copywriter job listings.

Indeed had 967 remote copywriting job listings.

Set Indeed’s job filter to anywhere in the world, and you’ll see hundreds of copywriting jobs.

And a quick Google search revealed in-house copywriter jobs from a wide range of brands.

The supplement company in my small town is looking to fill a senior copywriter position.

And a few others you may have heard of – Lands’ End, Paramount+, Dave Ramsey, Target, and Meta – are all looking for copywriters.

Is copywriting a growing career?

While the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics doesn’t report specifically on the copywriter career path, their Occupational Outlook Handbook does include jobs similar to copywriting jobs.

So, they could give us an idea of the demand for copywriters.

The U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the overall employment of Advertising, Promotions, and Marketing Managers is projected to grow 10% from 2020 to 2030.

The Bureau reports that this is about as fast as the average for all occupations.

The organization also reported that from 2020 to 2030, the employment of writers and authors is projected to grow by 9%, which is also about as fast as the average for all occupations.

So even if we ignore the number of brands focusing more on their online marketing presence.

And we ignore the number of new online businesses that will need copywriting for their digital assets…

We can hypothesize that the copywriting profession will likely continue to grow at (at least) an average pace.

How to get a copywriting job

There are many ways to become a copywriter. But here are three steps to get your feet wet right away (and then secure full-time employment as a copywriter):

1. Make sure you understand what copywriting is (and what it isn’t)

If you’re not 100% sure of what copywriting is, how can you know that it’s what you want to pursue?

Focus on the basics first.

Check out this article on “what is copywriting” to get a basic understanding of the copywriting industry, copywriting skills, and what a career in copywriting could be like.

2. If you want to be a skilled copywriter, you must be a lifelong learner (and practitioner)

Buy copywriting books (and read them). Take copywriting courses. Find a successful copywriter that’s willing to mentor you.

You’ll learn about types of copywriting: SEO copywriting, UX copywriting, direct response copywriting, and conversion copywriting.

You’ll study copywriting techniques and copywriting formulas.

Finally, you’ll write.

From email copywriting to writing sales letters. Every day you should write copy.

Plus, as you write, you’re building examples of your work.

Potential employers will likely ask for a sample of your writing at some point in the hiring process.

3. When you’re looking for full-time employment, you need to stand out from other applicants

So do your homework.

Read the entire job listing. Multiple times. And follow the directions to a T.

You’d be surprised how many people don’t take the time to read and follow directions. Hello, rejection pile!

Research the company you’re applying to.

Your application materials should reflect key points you discovered about the job and the brand.

Make sure you’ve updated your social media profiles. Check out their social media posts. And consider engaging with appropriate comments.

Above all, demonstrate your writing skills.

Brands want to see evidence that you have the potential to be an effective copywriter for their company.
