The Original Conversion Copywriter

My first year as a freelance copywriter was a six-figure year.

I attribute that to the books I launched. And then there’s the seven years I spent working in-house before going freelance – first as a “creative writer” (AKA a copywriter that hadn’t yet embraced the title) and then as an agency copywriter. In 20XX, I joined Intuit as a senior copywriter.

At Intuit, I started getting measured for my work. I had to present my copy to the team and then watch it get picked apart. It was a constant game of proving that I knew what I was doing. But in the beginning, I didn’t. So I had to learn. That’s when I really started to care about copywriting as a craft. I began studying conversion rate optimization and old-school copywriting.

The more I learned, the more intrigued I got about the idea of testing and using the data to craft copy that converts. I started calling myself a conversion-focused copywriter. And then eventually, I dropped the “focused” part and established the field of conversion copywriting.

I transitioned into six-figure freelance copywriting by writing – wait for it – content. Because when it comes down to it, authority-building content is what my seven-figure business is built on. And if you want a piece of what I have, this is the part you can’t afford to skip over.

Joanna's six-figure advice for you: The one thing you can’t do

“If you’re going to make money out in the world, you have to show that copywriters are valuable.”

You can make six figures – and then some – as a freelance copywriter. The Six-Figure Freelance Copywriter book is filled with stories of freelancers who have continued to grow their six-figure revenue year after year.

But here’s the one thing you can’t do as a six-figure earner that you may have gotten away with before the $100K mark… you can’t be a wallflower.

You also can’t ride someone else’s coattails. And you can’t depend on someone else to send referrals your way. That’s your job. Being a six-figure freelance copywriter requires you to take full responsibility for your own success. Even if it feels uncomfortable.

But if you’re ready to step up and put in the work, the sky’s the limit. And when you need some inspiration, motivation or just a good kick in the pants… come back to the stories in this book.

Consider them your on-hand reminder of the doors that can open for you once you get serious about building your authority and growing your business.
