One post on Hacker News, and my life changed. It was 2010, and I was working at tech giant Intuit while, in my spare time, feasting on all things startup. I was obsessed. So I was thrilled to help out a tech founder who’d asked HN for feedback on his website. I sent him my notes. 

Three days later, my inbox blew up.

The founder had posted to HN about how I’d helped him rewrite his copy. And 50+ startup founders were hungry for the same. When I told them I’d love to help them all but I just couldn’t – not with my day job – a few suggested I write a book about copywriting. 

I did. 

In 2011, I launched those books on Hacker News. Dharmesh Shah was one of the first to buy. And after $20K in sales, I figured, hey, maybe I’ll start my own startup. I’ll focus on teach startups to write copy.

That was the birth of Copyhackers. For 15 years, we served 1000s of startup founders, marketers and copywriters. 

And as those founders sold their businesses, they invited the copywriter they knew well – yours truly – to help their new teams at much, much larger organizations write convincing copy. 

Today, rebranded as JO, I use my background in big tech and tiny startups to help organizations find their voice, write performance copy and distribute their message to the corners of the earth. Yes, I’m a flat earther. No, I’m not. 

I’ve been invited to speak on 100s of stages, including these ones on repeat: Business of Software, CXL Live, CTA Conf and Microconf. I’ve also written a book, The Copyselling System (BenBella / Simon & Schuster), which is available July 21, 2026.
