The $100K Proposal

Prerna Malik and her husband Mayank co-founded the boutique copywriting agency Content Bistro. Together they strategize and write end-to-end launches and evergreen funnels for creative entrepreneurs. They’ve generated millions of dollars for course creators in a whole host of niches, ranging from self-publishing to succulent gardening.

But Prerna didn’t become an in-demand six-figure conversion copywriter overnight. Her introduction to that world – the one where you get paid to write – started with her blog, The Mom Writes. As her readership grew, she began to receive messages from small businesses asking if she could write their blog and social media posts too. And so she started offering the creative work she loved in a freelance capacity.

In 2010, Mayank got very sick. With Mayank out of work, Prerna saw an opportunity to turn her creative freelance work into an actual pays-the-bills business. And Mayank saw an opportunity to bring his own skill set (namely growth and finance) to the business.

That first year, Prerna made $25K writing blog posts and social media posts for small businesses. This was proof they could build a business doing something they loved, with the lifestyle to both raise their child and take time off when health needs called for it.

Since then, Prerna and Mayank have scaled their copywriting business to $650K/year. Prerna continues to write all the creative, thus proving that you can still make a mighty fine living writing copy, even if, like Prerna, English is your second language.

Prerna's six-figure advice for you: Be intentional about your growth

“Our first year, we made $25K. For us it’s been a slow and steady journey. And then it’s just kinda grown. We’ve grown every year.”

Intentional growth doesn’t happen without intentional strategy. And Prerna and Mayank are highly intentional about which growth strategies they employ. The three “buckets” they look at when considering growth strategies are:

  1. Skills
  2. Support
  3. Visibility

If you plan to do the client work yourself, invest in high-quality training and masterminds so you can keep sharpening your skills. But don’t just leave it there. Take the course and complete the course. And use what you learn to get better results for both your clients and your business.

Hire people to handle the areas outside your zone of genius. Then you can increase your capacity for client projects, resulting in more revenue for your business. Plus, you get to spend your time on what you’re truly passionate about. And don’t wait to hire.

Remember, hiring isn’t just about creating more revenue. It’s about making space for the areas of your business that bring you the most joy. So take that step to build a team that supports your strengths and passions.

When it comes to visibility, guest expert programs have been huge for Prerna. Speak on podcasts and in masterclasses or do guest training appearances inside other people’s programs. This will get you in front of fresh audiences that are used to paying for training, which is great if you have programs to sell, and it can automatically position you as an expert.

Prerna encourages you to set goals around these three growth buckets. When you know what your skills, support and visibility goals are for the year, it becomes easy to turn down opportunities that aren’t a good use of your time and make strategic decisions with confidence.
