Joanna Wiebe is the founder of Copyhackers – where marketers of all stripes become the most profitable people in the room.
Before building Copyhackers from her kitchen table, Jo got her start as an agency copywriter circa 2004.
She had just dropped out of Law School for two reasons: 1) her beloved dad passed away the night before Law School started, and 2) she realized she liked taking LSAT practice tests more than she actually wanted to be a lawyer. She was about to turn 24, and for the first time, she didn’t know what was around the corner for her.Â
See, the plan had always been really simple. She’d graduated high school and gone straight to university. Then straight from university to a year in Japan. Then straight from Japan to a year at a law office, in preparation for what was supposed to happen next: three years of Law School.Â
What the Helsinki was she going to do now?
Her friend worked a local B2B agency. They were looking for someone to “do the writing.”
“Like, get paid to write?” Jo asked her friend. “That’s an actual job? The kind with business cards and a desk?”Â
It was all unfathomable.Â
And she had student loans to pay. So she applied. Somehow landed the job. And on her first day, she made an absolutely catastrophic move:
One of the cofounders (Ted) asked what title she wanted on her business cards. After discussing how boring the title “copywriter” sounded, Ted and Jo agreed on “Creative Writer.”Â
Big mistake. Huge.Â
Our Jo was set back a good five years. Because, in fact, she was not hired to be a creative writer. What she’d eventually come to learn is this:
No one’s paying you to write. They’re paying you to SELL.
Her friend worked a local B2B agency. They were looking for someone to “do the writing.” Which was fascinating to Jo. Like, you could get PAID to write? That’s a whole career??
She applied for the job. She got the job.Â
On her first day, one of the cofounders (Ted) sat her down and asked what title she wanted on her business cards. Floored that she’d get business cards – not one of which she ever handed out BTW – she quickly poo-pooed the idea of being called “Copywriter.” It sounded so boring. What did it even mean??
So Ted and Jo agreed on “Creative Writer.” And that must’ve set our Jo back a good five years. Because, in fact, she was not hired to be a creative writer. What she’d come to learn is this:
No one’s paying you to write. They’re paying you to SELL.
For over 15 years, companies like BT, Canva, Huel, Glowforge, Intuit, MetaLab, Prezi, Sprout Social and VWO have trusted Joanna to help them find their message. She’s trained teams at Shopify, Thinkific and AWS. And she’s coached thousands of freelance copywriters on their rise to copywriting superstardom. A tier where mind-blowing results and five-figure invoices go hand in hand.
