Need to write onboarding emails stat? Use the data you have to create an email onboarding campaign that’ll help your early users get more out of any new product.

Marketing a new product or app to a beta audience can be hard because you don’t have the juicy voice of customer data that’s vital to great copywriting.

Don’t ever skip sending an onboarding campaign, even to your beta users; you’re wasting a valuable opportunity to connect with the early adopters willing to take a chance on your awesome new product.

Here’s what to do: Prompt AI to write onboarding emails for a new product for you. Here are the first three emails of a onboarding email campaign Open AI’s GPT-3.5 created for me when I used the AI copywriting prompts I’m about to teach you (check out the full email campaign here):

Here’s how to use GPT-3.5 to get similar results for your business or client.

Step 1: Gather your data (for the onboarding emails)

The goal of Step 1 is to get all the data you have about your awesome new product. Include everything you’ve got on all the features, your user’s or customer’s persona, instructions on how to use it and any user feedback you’ve gotten so far. For the purposes of demonstrating this prompt, I used data on the note-taking app, Evernote, to stand-in as the “new” note-taking app.

Pro tip: use The Value Prism method to tap deeper into all the details of your new product.

Step 2: Prompt GPT-3.5 to write onboarding emails for the campaign

Next, we’re going to use all that data you gathered in Step 1 to prompt AI.

In GPT-3.5, prompt GPT-3.5 to write your email onboarding campaign. In addition to the data you have about your product, you’re going to include specifications on how you want your emails to be written.

Visit the shared chat to see how I prompted GPT-3.5.

Here are ways you can instruct AI to write your emails:

  • The number of emails you want in the campaign
  • The purpose of the campaign
    • I told GPT-3.5 that the purpose of this example email campaign is to encourage the user to return to the app and help them get the most out of the app within the free 30-day trial period.
  • Instructions for multiple subject lines, preview text copy and calls-to-action so you can A/B test for more opens and click-throughs
  • Instructions on content
    • In my example, I told GPT-3.5 that each email should have only one topic, and that the topic for each email is how to use a specific app feature, with an example use case. I also told it to include a template instruction to insert a screenshot or link to a video or a help doc as well as a CTA encouraging the user to leave a review about the new product, that should be placed before the sign-off in the email. Don’t forget to include a line or two telling your reader they can always hit reply with any questions or comments and to ask for feedback or a review!
  • Your favorite copywriting formula
  • Instructions on tone, voice and reading level.
    • I included a line that telling GPT-3.5 that I want the reader to feel excited to return to the app and try out the feature and see how it can improve their workflow.
  • Instructions to write the emails based on the data you gathered in Step 1.

Complete Step 2 by copying pasting your data into the chat below your own modified instructions.

I’m launching a new product with a very small audience and I need you to write an email onboarding campaign for new customers who’ve never used this product before. The name of the new product is [ product name ].

Step 3: Optimize your new email onboarding sequence… and launch!

Take the email campaign GPT-3.5 wrote for you and optimize the copy for more opens and click-throughs. Congratulations on launching your new product with badass onboarding emails. 🎉

Don’t forget to add any screenshots or links you asked AI to include in each email.

Here’s the onboarding campaign AI wrote for me:

I tried this AI prompt for a few different products. Here’s what happened.

I asked AI to write an email onboarding sequence for a “new” kitchen product: an enameled cast iron pot. I used copy from the “Care & Use” page on Le Creuset website, to provide content for the campaign emails.

Remember that this email onboarding sequence is just the first version of many versions you’ll send out as more and more people use your new product or app. The email marketing for your new product or service will continue to evolve in its messaging as your business grows and changes (and, as you have more voice of customer data to work with). The important thing is to just start shipping!
