The Joy of Slowing Down

Samar is a key player in the email copywriting space for SaaS and ecommerce companies. She’s also a testament to the power of strategic, intentional authority building as a way to catapult yourself into healthy six-figure territory.

In fact, less than two years into writing email copy, Samar found herself booked out six months in advance. That was her first six-figure year. Since then, she’s been slowing down – while making more and more money.

This year (2023), however, Samar is actively taking a step back from her $200K salary to relax. She’s hitting pause on her live program, stripping back her client work and giving herself a $120K pay cut.

Her $60-80K year will consist of just 3-4 projects which she will write herself. Instead of chasing the next arbitrary milestone, she’ll focus on building more ease into the foundations of her business. And she’ll spend the rest of her time relaxing with her family and blissfully turning down projects she has no desire to take on.

The Life After HubSpot

Joel Klettke is the founder of Case Study Buddy, a seven-figure business dedicated to helping B2B companies grow their revenue with case studies and video testimonials. He’s also available to hire as a freelance conversion copywriter and CRO consultant.

Joel branched out on his own in 2013 while working at an SEO agency. The company he worked for hired a freelance copywriter to write product descriptions and the content was… bad. He knew the company was paying her $50/hr and it got him wondering what his work might be worth – so he went out on his own.

To begin with, Joel focused on writing blog posts and ebooks. 18 months into his business, he discovered Copyhackers and conversion copywriting, which was nothing like the sketchy, overblown direct response copy he was used to seeing (Joel’s words!). We met that year (2014). And Joel began shifting away from content toward conversion copy.

Landing one huge client set Joel up as one of the most in-demand freelance copywriters in the SaaS industry.

Samar's six-figure advice for you: Be consistent with ONE specific type of marketing

“Find that one style of marketing that doesn’t make you miserable. Stay consistent with it.”

Whether you hope to hit $100K, $500K or build more ease into your $60-80K business, here’s what Samar wants you to know:

You don’t have to post on all the social media channels, release a podcast and hit up every marketing conference to hit six figures with relative ease. Pick one style of marketing that doesn’t make you miserable – and stay consistent with it.

Samar has stayed consistent with Twitter and speaking on podcasts. That consistency has produced all kinds of opportunities. In fact, the last time she put out a call to be a guest on a podcast, she booked 16 appearances.

The more you show up and stay consistent, the more opportunities you’ll create for yourself. Samar encourages you to show up for those opportunities – even if (and especially if) they’re out of your comfort zone. Say yes first. Freak out later.

Joel's six-figure takeaway: Stay curious

“Stay curious about what others have to teach you. There’s an inherent humility to curiosity.”

If you want to earn a healthy six figures writing for big companies, you’ll need to develop skills beyond conversion copywriting. Should you develop those skills and strategically build your network like Joel, you can expect to charge high (like, $10K a landing page high) rates for your work.

However, Joel encourages you not to put too much pressure on yourself to bill those big invoices out the gate. Instead, he encourages you to stay curious.

Don’t lose that and put too much pressure on yourself to be rich and successful. Remind yourself to be more curious. And don’t be threatened by the notion of not knowing.
