Ry

Schwartz

The 6-Figure Recluse

Ry left his corporate marketing job in 2010 to become a Hollywood screenwriter. And by “left,” I mean he literally gave away his shirts and ties and vowed to never wear them again.

Like me, Ry sort of stumbled into copywriting. He was looking up jobs as a screenwriter and instead found a copywrting job for a local marketing agency in Montreal. On his first day, he fired up his computer and searched “what is a copywriter?” A Copyhackers article appeared and he began inhaling blog posts.

Between then and now, Ry has worked for some of the biggest names in the course creator industry. He has generated more than $25M for the likes of Amy Porterfield and Traffic & Funnels. And he landed those clients with no website. No email list. And zero online presence.

If growing your visibility is your least favorite part of freelance copywriting, Ry’s story will show you how you might go about landing big fish clients without posting on social media or busting out the pom poms for a big brand photoshoot. But proceed with caution. Because even Ry admits he has a couple of regrets about how he ran his business in the early days.

Ry's six-figure advice for you: “Don’t do what I did”

“I would not do it the same. I could have gotten to six figures a lot more peacefully and enjoyably instead of that chaotic sprint. I would encourage intentionality. It’s okay to say no to projects and people. You’re okay financially. You’re not starving right now.”

Ry’s story is a great example of how far doing great work and forming relationships with other entrepreneurs can get you.

However, it’s also a reminder that if you don’t take the time to build your brand and systems properly, you’re likely to burn out and miss out on opportunities.

If getting $60-80K/year in your business has felt like an uphill struggle, you might still feel like you have to say yes to projects if they lead to bigger opportunities. If that’s the case, Ry’s advice is to stop saying yes to every project out of fear. Instead, use that time to build structure into your business. That’s the stuff that will pay off for you in the long run.
